OBTAINED ENSLAVEMENT was formed in 1989 by Døden on guitar, Torquemada on drums, and Pest on vocals. Three years later, Heks (guitar) joined the band. With this line-up, they released the demo Out of the Crypts in 1993 and their debut full-length CD, Centuries of Sorrow in 1994. With the addition of bass player Tortur, who was later replaced by Torgrim (Malignant Eternal), Obtained Enslavement recorded Witchcraft. Shortly thereafter, Morrigan (Aeturnus) joined to take up keyboard responsibilities.
